<br />104 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JANUAJtY 29 ~ 1957 <br /> <br />A special meeting of Martinsville City Council, with Vice-Mayor John W. Shultz <br /> <br />presiding, Mayor F. V. 'Vloodson being absent because of illness, was he ld in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, January 29, 1957, at 7:30 P.M., the <br /> <br />following members being present: Vice-:Ma;yor and Councilman John W. Shultz; and <br /> <br />Councilmen B. H. Hill, E. E. Stone, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />The purpose of this meeting, as stated by Vice-Mayor Shultz, was to consider and/or <br /> <br />adopt a resolution to establish a Commission on Human Values, to consider appointing <br /> <br />and/or to appoint members to the Commission, and to consider and/or act upon such <br /> <br />other matters as may be properly brought to Council's attention. <br /> <br />A draft of a suggested resolution establishing such a Connnission having been <br /> <br />presented to the Coumil by City Manager Hirst and read in its ent:i:rety, upon <br /> <br />motion, COtU1cil unanimously adopted the resolution as presented and appointed the <br /> <br />following local citizens as the five-member commission: Dr. T. H. Dickerson, <br /> <br />Mr. D. Hurd Goode, Mr. Willis Milton, Mrs. Claude E. (Helen Ford) Taylor, Jr., <br /> <br />and :Mr. Thornton G. 'i'Tampler. The resolution follows: <br /> <br />Resolution Establishing Commission on Human Values <br /> <br />Be it resolved by the Council of the City of r~tinsville, Virginia, in <br />special meeting assembled this the 29th day of January, 1957, that there <br />is created and established by this resolution a Commission on Human <br />Values for the City of Martireville, Virginia, said Connnission to be <br />constituted, organized and empowered as herein provided or as may be <br />hereafter implemented by the Ci4Y Council. <br /> <br />The City Council does establish this Conmdssion under the powers of the <br />Council, as granted by Charter, to promote and maintain the general <br />welfare of the Ci-W and its inhabitants. <br /> <br />1. The Connnission on Human Values shall consist of five members who shall <br />be appointed by the City Council and ,vho shall be residents of the <br />City of Martinsville. Of the five members first appointed to the <br />Commission following the adoption of this resolution, tvvo shall serve <br />for three years each, b'lO shall serve for two years each, and one shall <br />serve for one year.
