Shultz presiding in the absence of Mayor F. V. <br /> <br />Wooc1.son, who was ill, was neld in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, <br /> <br />JanuaIJ' 22, 1957, at 7:30 P.lt., the following members being present: Vice-Ma;yor <br /> <br />and Councilman John W. Shultz; and Councilmen B. H. Hill, E. E. stone, and <br /> <br />J. R. W'alker. <br /> <br />Aft.er the ir.vocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held January 8, 1957. <br /> <br />Upon motion, Council accepted the following January 14th (1957) report and <br /> <br />recorrmendation of the ?lanning Commission pertainL~ to their recommended planning <br /> <br />pr oe,r am, authorizing the execution of a contract with City &: Tovm Planning <br /> <br />Associates, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with the understanding that the <br /> <br />$1,500.00 appropriation in the current budget will be sufficient to carry out <br /> <br />the ....mrk during the current fiscal year and that the remainder of the total- <br /> <br />$15,ooo.oO--cost, part of which is to be shared in by the Virginia Department of <br /> <br />Highways and the Federal Bureau of Public Roads OJ 1ifill be appropriated in the <br /> <br />1957-58 and 1958-59 budgets: <br /> <br />Honoreble Mayor and City Council <br />Ci ty of ~[artinsvi1le, Virginia <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br />Your Plaming Cor.nnission, on October 23, 1956, reported to you its activities <br />in regard to a planning program for Martinsville. In this report they <br />endorsed a proposal for planning fcr Martinsville submitted by James M. Webb <br />and As~ociates to cost $lO,OOOplus a request to the State Highway' ~partrnent <br />to conduct a traffic study which would be necessary for a thoroughfare study <br />for T.'tartinsvi lie. (Please refer to our letter of October 23, 1956, Page 3, <br />Paragraph 2, a copy of vn1ich is attached hereto.) <br />
