158

TUESDAY

OCTOBER 12. 1965

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor J. Frank Wilson presiding, was held Tuesday, October 12,

1965, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members

of Council were present, viz., Mayor J. Frank Wilson; Vice-Mayor Fred T.

Renick, M.D.; Harry L. Boaz; Thomas J. Burch; and E. E. Stone.

Upon being informed that there no longer exists the urgency which originally

attended J~. R. L. Whitener's (Jr.) special-use-and-zoning-variance petition,

presented to Council on July 27, 1965, Council unanimously accepted the

Planning Commission's report thereon dated September 27th and, thus, denied

Mr. Whitener's petition requesting permission for location of a trailer

court on his property at the south end of Sellers Street.

City Manager Hirst and Public Works Director George W. Brown reported that,

with the cooperation of Lester Lumber Company, correction is in process of

the condition brought to Council's attention on August 24 (1965) by Mr. H. E.

Thomas (through his counsel, Mr. Frank I. Richardson, Jr., Attorney at Law),

involving Mr. Thomas' property between George and Liberty Streets and the

impounding of water thereon as a result of the construction of Armory Road.

Reporting on its viewing of the surface-water drainage problem along

Brookdale Road, Council appointed a special committee (composed of Council-

man Thomas J. Burch, City Attorney Irvin W. Cubine, and Public Works

Director George W. Brown) to confer with Mr. Wilbur S. Doyle, of Doyle

Ready-Mixed Concrete, toward obtaining an easement across the Doyle property

off Brookdale Road whereby surface water might be diverted without damage to

properties.
