<br />2: <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JULY 14. 1964 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor J. Frank Wilson presiding, was held in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, Tuesday, July 14, 196/+, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all <br /> <br />members being present, viz., Mayor J. Frank Wilson; Vice-Mayor Fred T. Renick, <br /> <br />M.D.; Harry L. Boaz; Thomas J. Burch; and E. E. Stone. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its <br /> <br />regular ~eeting held June 23, 1964. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged--and filed for consideration--a petition submitted by <br /> <br />residents of Pond Street, requesting the construction of curb-and-gutter <br /> <br />(on a shared-cost basis) along Pond Street, from and between Minor Street <br /> <br />and Hairston Street. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />Members of the City School Board, along with School Superintendent John D. <br /> <br />Richmond, appeared before Council and cited the need for funds for architect- <br /> <br />ural services in connection with preliminary plan preparation for a new high <br /> <br />school which the School Board intends to construct on the rrLester" site on <br /> <br />Northside Drive. The School Board informed Council that Mr. J. Coates <br /> <br />Carter, Architect, in association with a New York firm, has been retained <br /> <br />to prepa::"'e preliminary dravlings and that funds are available--upon proper <br /> <br />request--from the Federal Housing & Home Finance Agency for plan preparation, <br /> <br />on a rrloan" basis but not re-payable until actual construction is undertaken. <br /> <br />Several members of Council indicated that there is some opposition among the <br /> <br />ci ti zens to building a new high school on the "Lester" site and, further, <br /> <br />Councilmen Renick and Burch inquired as to the possibilities and feasibility <br /> <br />of enlarging high school facilities at the present location in the Brown- <br /> <br />^_. <br /> <br />
