50

TUESDAY

JULY 10, 1962

The regular semi-monthly meetiq; of the Council of the C it.y- of Martinsville,
Virginia, with Mayor J. Frank Wilson presiding and with all Irembers of Council
present (viz., Mayor J. Frank Wilson; Vice-Mayor Fred T. Renick; Thomas J.
Burch; E. E. Stone; and Harry L. Boaz), was he ld in the Council Chamber, City
Hall, Tuesday, July 10, 1962, at 7:30 P.M.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular
meeting held June 26, 1962, and of its special meeting held June 29, 1962.

Members of the Citizens Parking Committee, with Mr. Joe Howell as spokesman,

appeared before Council and reconmended that vehicular parking at on-street

meters in the central business district be limited to one hour and that

appropriate regulations to enforce limited parking be ena.cted. The Connnittee

reported that such regulatiom would provide a more rapid turn-over of

on-street parking spaces-than now prevails--for short-duration parking. The

Connnittee also reported that the Board of Directors of the Retail Merchants

Association has endorsed the Committee's proposal and recommendation. Council

continued this matter for study.

Upon reconrroondation of C orrnnissiorer of Revenue J. David Morris, Council directed

that a refund of local business license tax of $75.00, paid Jure 5, 1962, be

made to the Martinsville Kiwanis Club, thus granting the Kiwanis Club's request

submLtted to Council June 26, 1962.

Upon motion, duly secorrled and unanimously carried, Council confirmed the

recent execution of a deed conveying the City's North Martinsville Playground

tract to Sale Knitting Company. City Mamger Hirst inforrred Council that Sale

Knitting Compan;y, in the near future, probably will request the closing and

vacating of several unopened streets within the area conveyed.
