T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday, August

27, 1968, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all

members being present, viz., Dr. F. T. Renick, Mayor; Mr. E. E. Stone,

Vice-Mayor; Mr. Harry L. Boaz; Mr. W. Donald Hartford; and Mr. Francis T.

West.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular

meeting held August 13, 1968.

With reference to a request of June 24, 1968, by the Triangle Citizens Band

Club of Martinsville & Henry County, seeking the assistance of the City

through its Police Department by providing 24-hour monitoring of emergency

radio calls, City Manager Noland presented a report (dated August 19, 1968)

analyzing the request as well as the burden it would place upon the Police

Department, with the conclusion that he recommended denial of the request;

whereupon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council commended the

Club for its interest and efforts in providing emergency service through its

radio equipment but, in accepting City Manager Noland's recommendation,

determined that the City could not assume the responsibility and burden and,

therefore, denied the request.

In connection with a petition submitted June 25, 1968, by Messrs. George M.

Hairston, Jr. and Sherman Mahan, requesting the closing of that portion of

"F" Street which lies between First and Second Streets, the Planning Commission

-

recommended that the request be denied because of objections registered by

area property owners and, also, because of the anticipated feasibility of

opening this street to accommodate traffic in the area. Upon motion, duly

seconded and unanimously carried, Council accepted the Commission's
