2HI

TUESDAY

MAY 14. 1968

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held in the Council

Chamber of the new City Hall, Tuesday, May 14, 1968, beginning at 7:30 P.M.,

all members being present, viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor E. E.

Stone; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford; and Francis T. West. Special

recognition was given to the fact that this meeting was the first regular

meeting conducted by the Council in the new City Hall, for which "Open House"

was observed the afternoons of May 11th and May 12th.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular

meeting held April 23, 1968 and of its special meeting held April 29, 1968.

Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing--

at which no one registered any objections--on the proposal to close and vacate

the street known as "National Highway", location of which is hereinafter

described. Council, having received the Planning Commission's recommendation

that such street be vacated and abandoned, and receiving at this meeting a

written report of a duly-constituted Board of Viewers that, in its opinion,

no inconvenience whatsoever would result to anyone if this street is closed,

unanimously adopted the following ordinance directing the closing of said

street and providing for deeding to the City of right-of-way for sidewalk

purposes on the south side of East Main Street:

WHEREAS, by petition filed March 12, 1968 with Martinsville City
Council, owners of property abutting that street known as "National.
Highway" (sail owners being the First Methodist Church, Lee Telephone
Company, and Globman Realty Corporation) requested the closing and
vacating of said street; and

WHEREAS, by subsequent action, said Martinsville City Council referred
this petition to the City's Planning Commission and, also, appointed a
Board of Viewers to perform the duties set forth in Section 15.1-364
of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended); and
