<br />2 r:;, r <br />'t) < <br /> <br />JANUARY 23, 1968 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the COlillCil of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday, January <br /> <br />23, 1968, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all <br /> <br />members being present, viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor E. E. Stone; <br /> <br />Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford; and Francis T. West. <br /> <br />,..'- <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meetings held December 26, 1967 and January 9, 1968. <br /> <br />Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, in accordance with Section 3 of <br /> <br />Chapter 8 of the Charter of the City of Martinsville, Council conducted a <br /> <br />public hearing on a proposal--carrying the Planning Commission's approval <br /> <br />dated December 22, 1967--to vacate, close, and abandon that portion of Salem <br /> <br />Street which consists generally of a IIstraight-linell projection of said <br /> <br />portion from Manilla Street eastward toward Memorial Boulevard, which portion <br /> <br />was replaced several years ago by a realignment of Salem Street to provide <br /> <br />access to said Memorial Boulevard. There being no objections registered by <br /> <br />anyone to said proposed closing, and with the understanding that easement <br /> <br />rights-of-way for City utilities shall be protected and retained, Council <br /> <br />adopted the following ordinance effecting said proposed closing: <br /> <br />WhEREAS, as a result of--or coincident with--the construction of Memorial <br />Boulevard several years ago, the Salem Street entrance thereto from <br />Manilla Street was relocated, leaving as undeveloped a former right-of-way <br />between said Manilla Street and Memorial Boulevard; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it was understood by adjoining property owners that, with the <br />relocating of the Salem Street entrance to Memorial Boulevard, the City <br />would vacate and abandon said undeveloped portion of Salem Street; and <br />
