Ji

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 26, 1967

/"

The regular selni-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday,

September 26, 1967, beginning at 7:30 P.M., in the Council Chamber, City Hall,

all members being present with the exception of Councilman Francis T. West

(who was out of town), viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor E. E. Stone;

Harry L. Boaz; and W. Donald Hartford.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular

meeting held September 12, 1967.

Pursuant to duly-advertised public notice, Council conducted a public hearing

on the prcposed closing of a portion of Burl Street (unopened), which closing

was requested by Messrs. Landon R. Wyatt, Sr., and J. E. Richardson under date

of August 22, 1967 and on which a duly-constituted Board of Viewers reported

its findings at Council's September 12th (1967) meeting. This closing petition

having also been referred tc the Planning Commission, the Comission reported

as follows:

Your Planning Commission at its meeting on Thursday, September 21, 1967,
gave consideration to Council1s reference with regard to a petition request-
ing the abandonment of Burl Street in West Martinsville, particularly that
portion of Burl Street to the rear of Wyatt Buick.

Following due consideration of this matter, the Commission determined that
it did not have enough information with regard to the ownership and/or
location of vacant lots on the north side of Burl Street and fronting thereon.

Therefore, the Commission makes the following recommendation to Council:
that Council not take any action on the closing of Burl Street until the
Commission can obtain enough information in order that it can make a
recomllendation on the closing of Burl Street. It is further recommended
that Council adopt a more formalized policy of procedure on street closings
in the future.

Representi~g the petitioners was Mr. J. Grady Monday, Attorney at Law, and an

associate of Mr. William F. Stone, Attorney at Law, who presented the petition
