LG8

TUESDAY

MAY 23. 1967

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor Fred T. Renick, M. D., presiding, was held Tuesday,
May 23, 1967, beginning at 7:30 P.M., in the Council Chamber, City Hall,
with all members being present, viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor
E. E. Stone; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford; and Francis T. West.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its

regular meeting held May 9, 1967.

Mr. Lawrence Wales, Vice-President of Wheat & Company, financial advisor

to the City, presented a status report on proceedings pertaining to the

offering for sale the City's authorized bonds yet unissued.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council placed on

first reading a proposed City budget--as introduced May 9, 1967--for the

fiscal year ending June 30, 1968, calling for a duly-advertised public

hearing thereon at Council's forthcoming June 13th meeting.

City Manager Noland informed Council that, in order that necessary plans

and preparation can be formulated, it would be appropriate for Council

to designate an official to be responsible for the operation of the

Cityls new jail, now under construction, and for the custody of prisoners

to be co~fined therein. In view of the fact that substantial financial

participation or assistance is available from the State of Virginia if

the jail is the responsibility of the City Sergeant, Council authorized

the preparation of a resolution whereby the City Sergeant will be so

designated.
