<br />LG8 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 23. 1967 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor Fred T. Renick, M. D., presiding, was held Tuesday, <br />May 23, 1967, beginning at 7:30 P.M., in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />with all members being present, viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor <br />E. E. Stone; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford; and Francis T. West. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its <br /> <br />regular meeting held May 9, 1967. <br /> <br />Mr. Lawrence Wales, Vice-President of Wheat & Company, financial advisor <br /> <br />to the City, presented a status report on proceedings pertaining to the <br /> <br />offering for sale the City's authorized bonds yet unissued. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council placed on <br /> <br /> <br />first reading a proposed City budget--as introduced May 9, 1967--for the <br /> <br /> <br />fiscal year ending June 30, 1968, calling for a duly-advertised public <br /> <br />hearing thereon at Council's forthcoming June 13th meeting. <br /> <br />City Manager Noland informed Council that, in order that necessary plans <br /> <br />and preparation can be formulated, it would be appropriate for Council <br /> <br />to designate an official to be responsible for the operation of the <br /> <br />Cityls new jail, now under construction, and for the custody of prisoners <br /> <br />to be co~fined therein. In view of the fact that substantial financial <br /> <br />participation or assistance is available from the State of Virginia if <br /> <br /> <br />the jail is the responsibility of the City Sergeant, Council authorized <br /> <br /> <br />the preparation of a resolution whereby the City Sergeant will be so <br /> <br />designated. <br />
