<br />no <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST 9, 1966 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor J. Frank Wilson presiding, was held Tuesday, August 9, <br /> <br />1966, beginning at 7:30 P.M., in the Council Chamber, City Hall, with all <br /> <br /> <br />members being present, with the exception of Dr. Fred T. Renick, Vice-Mayor, <br /> <br />viz., Mayor J. Frank Wilson; Harry L. Boaz; Thomas J. Burch; and E. E. Stone. <br /> <br />Pursuant to advertised public notice, Council conducted public hearings on <br /> <br />applications submitted July 12, 1966--and referred to the Planning Commission-- <br /> <br />by the Henry County Fair & Exposition (Mr. O. B. Hensley, Manager) and the <br /> <br />Martinsville Junior Chamber of Commerce, requesting granting of special-use <br /> <br /> <br />permits, respectively, to allow (1) the conduct of the 1966 Henry County Fair <br /> <br /> <br />September 5th-10th and (2) the conduct of the 1966 Henry County Horse Show <br /> <br /> <br />August 11th-13th at a site identified as WLiberty Heightstr, located off Liberty <br /> <br /> <br />Street ani Armory Road. Upon recommendation of the Planning Commission, Council <br /> <br /> <br />unanimously granted said permits and, also, authorized these permits to remain <br /> <br />in force for such purpose and at said location through 1970, subject to annual <br /> <br />request(s) by these permit-holders and subject to subsequent annual approval <br />by the Council. <br /> <br />In token of appreciation of the many years of public service rendered by the <br /> <br />City's living retired employees, Council presented each such employee (there <br /> <br />being eighteen) with a check in the amount of fifty dollars. <br /> <br />Attorney John D. Epperly appeared before Council in renewal of recent request, <br /> <br />on behalf of the Martinsville Retails Merchants Association and its members, <br /> <br />that the Council eliminate the City's gross receipts license tax on retail <br /> <br />merchants. A number of members of the Retail Merchants Association also <br /> <br />appeared in support of this request, several of whom addressed the Council <br />
