<br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,
<br />
<br />Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday, October
<br />
<br />12, 1971, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all
<br />
<br />members being present, viz., F. T. Renick, M.D., Mayor; Francis T. West,
<br />
<br />Vice Mayor; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford; and William D. Hobson.
<br />
<br />After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its
<br />
<br />regular meeting held September 28, 1971, with the exception of a portion of
<br />
<br />Lines l7, l8 and 19 on page 264 of Council Minute Book No. 19, dire~ting that
<br />
<br />said portion (i.e., referring to Memorial Hospital, etc.) be deleted.
<br />
<br />In acknowledging receipt, through City Manager Noland, of additional information
<br />
<br />recently requested, i.e., as to the additional cost to be assumed by the City
<br />
<br />if Council subscribed to the "early retirement" provisions of the Virginia
<br />
<br />Supplemental Retirement System, applicable to the City's law enforcement personnel,
<br />
<br />which cost has been acmsrily determined as amounting to approximately $2,762.00
<br />
<br />per year over the City's current annual contribution to the retirement program,
<br />
<br />Council unanimously adopted the following resolution requesting such "early
<br />
<br />retirement" coverage for the City's law enforcement personnel, effective April 1,
<br />
<br />1972 and agreeing to assume such cost:

<br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, a
<br />political subdivision, currently participating in the Virginia Supplemental
<br />Retirement System under the provisions of Title 51, Chapter 3.2, Article 4,
<br />of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (l950, and as amended), that the City of
<br />Martinsville does hereby elect to have such of its employees and officers,
<br />who are employed in law enforcement positions comparably hazardous to
<br />those of a State Police Officer and regularly employed full time on a
<br />salary basis, and whose tenure is not restricted as to temporary or
<br />provisional appointment, to become eligible effective April 1, 1972, to
<br />be provided benefits in the Virginia Supplemental Retirement System equiva-
<br />lent to those provided for State Police Officers in the Department of State
<br />Police, as set out in Sections 5l-l44 (15), 5l-l50, 5l-l5l, 5l-l52, 5l-l53,
<br />51-154, 51-155, 51-156, and 5l-l57 of said CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as
<br />amended), in lieu of the benefits that would otherwise be provided, as such
