i -J

TUESDAY

AUGUST l7, 1971

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held Tuesday, August

17, 1971 (rescheduled from August lO, 1971), in the Council Chamber, City

Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz., Mayor F. T.

Renick, M.D.; Vice-Mayor Francis T. West; Harry L. Boaz; W. Donald Hartford;

and William D. Hobson.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular

meeting held July 27, 1971.

Prior to the considering by Council of its prepared agenda, Vice-Mayor West

referred to the City's past offers to assist and cooperate with the Henry

County Board of Supervisors toward replacing the Henry County Jail with a

new such facility, hopefully that such a facility will be retained within

the City; and, in so referring, Vice-Mayor West emphasized the fact that the

City does not wish to "Meddle into the affairs" of Henry County but, with

Martinsville being a central location within the county and because of the

City's interest in retaining such a facility, would hope that the Supervisors

and Henry County citizens will give consideration to the City's interest and

position before making a final decision as to site location for a new jail.

Council then acknowledged receipt of--and reviewed--a copy of the presentation

prepared by the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce to be submitted

to the West Piedmont Planning District Commission in support of the City's

efforts to obtain for the City the proposed mental health facility to be

constructed and operated within the Planning District by the State Health

Department.
