29

TUESDAY

JULY 9, 1974

.-

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,

with Mayor Francis T. West presiding, was held Tuesday, July 9, 1974, in the Council

Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz.,

Francis T. West, Mayor; Harry L. Boaz, Vice Mayor; W. Donald Hartford; William D. Hobson;

and Morton W. Lester.

...-

After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting

held June 25, 1974.

Pursuant to action taken by Council during its meeting held June 25, 1974, pertaining

to petition dated February 26, 1974 and filed by Evelyn H. Stone, Trustee, requesting the

rezoning to "residentialll approximately 74 acres of petitioner's 78-acre tract situated

on the west side of Rives Road Extended, and in continuing duly-advertised public hearing

from said June 25th meeting at the request of petitioner, the Planning Commission

reported (under date of July 5, 1974) that, having conferred again with petitioner following

Council's June 25th meeting, as suggested by Council, the Commission sustains its

original recommendation (dated May 24, 1974) that the entire 78-acre tract be rezoned

to "R-9 Residential". The Commission further reported that it would not "close the

door to a request from the petitioner for the rezoning of this four acres to a proper

zone which might include the uses proposed by the petitioner" and, further, that

"...the Commission feels that a lighter commercial zone would be more compatible with the

residential uses in this area and more appropriate for the proposed use of the property."

Messrs. Roy C. Stone and John W. Holmes, representing petitioner, informed Council that

they would prefer zoning only the 74-acre portion as requested, inasmuch as they would

expect to develop the remaining four-acres (or some portion thereof) for light commercial

useage and, furthermore, could do so without having to request a rezoning thereof, to which

there might be some objection. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council
