<br />, ._~ ~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST l2, 1975 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor Harry L. Boaz presiding, was held Tuesday, August l2, 1975, in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P. M., all members being present, viz., <br /> <br />Harry L. Boaz, Mayor; William D. Hobson, Vice-Mayor; G. S. Fitz-Hugh, Jr.; <br /> <br />Barry A. Greene; and Morton W. Lester. <br /> <br />".- <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held July 22, 1975. <br /> <br />In connection with Sheriff James L. Carter's request for two additional personnel for <br /> <br />his staff, which request was filed with Council on July 22, 1975, City Manager Noland <br /> <br />presented a summary of findings obtained through the Virginia Municipal League <br /> <br />pertaining to courtroom security provided by agencies of other Virginia localities and <br /> <br />the responsibility in these localities for providing such security. Sheriff Carter <br /> <br />then provided supplemental information as to various duties and responsibilities of <br /> <br />his department and personnel, meanwhile expressing appreciation of the assistance and <br /> <br />cooperation extended to him by the City's Police Department whenever the need for such <br /> <br />assistance and cooperation has presented itself. Sheriff Carter, while renewing his <br /> <br />request for two additional staff personnel (viz., one male and one female), indicated <br /> <br />that he would be pleased with authorization to employ only one of the two requested <br /> <br />additions, viz., a female deputy charged with the duties and responsibilities of any <br /> <br />other deputy, including courtroom security, who would also be available for the <br /> <br />searching of female prisoners. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, <br /> <br />Council authorized Sheriff Carter to employ a female deputy at the annual salary rate <br /> <br />of $6,600.00, subject to the approval of the State Compensation Board and to its <br /> <br />participation in the salary cost of such a deputy to the extent it currently shares <br /> <br />in the cost of other such personnel salaries, meanwhile authorizing the transfer of a <br />
