September 5, 2000 <br /> <br />A regular, semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, was held on September 5, 2000, in Council Chamber of the Municipal Building, <br /> <br />beginning at 7:34 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council Members present <br /> <br />included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; and Council <br /> <br />Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, J. Ronald Ferrill, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br />Following the invocation by Vice Mayor Teague, Mayor Crabtree welcomed <br /> <br />everyone to the meeting. <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution recognizing Sammy Pickurel, City <br /> <br />employee, as the Appalachian League 'Groundskeeper of the Year'. Mr. PickUrel <br /> <br />stated, "There's a bunch of people who work with me every summer." Council Member <br /> <br />Dallas moved to adopt the following Resolution; the motion was duly seconded and <br /> <br />carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, <br /> <br />Dallas, Ferrili, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, for the first time in the recent history of professional <br />baseball in Martinsvi!le, Hooker Field head groundskeeper Sammy <br />Pickurel has been named the Appalachian League "Groundskeeper <br />of the Year; and <br />WHEREAS, Sammy Pickurel, City employee and winner of this <br />prestigious award, has worked for the City of Martinsville for 26 <br />years and specifically at Hooker Field since its establishment; and <br />WHEREAS, during this time Sammy Pickurel has maintained <br />Hooker Field and other City Parks in an exemplary manner, <br />demonstrating leadership and initiative that reflects his sincere and <br />exceptional commitment to his job and the betterment of the <br />Martinsville community; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville and the Houston Astros <br />partnered on major capital improvements to the playing surface of <br />Hooker Field in 1999 and Sammy has demonstrated outstanding <br />efforts towards the maintenance of this valuable community asset; <br />now, therefore .. ... <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, assembled in regular session this 5th day of September <br />2000, that said Council does hereby congratulate Sammy Pickurel <br /> <br /> <br />
