166. <br /> <br />TUESDAY, JULY 25, 1995 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor George B. Adams, Jr. presiding, was <br />held Tuesday, July 25, 1995 in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br />beginning at 7:30 P.M. The following members of Council were present: <br />George B. Adams, Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Mark A. Crabtree; <br />and M. Gene Teague. Absent was Clyde L. Williams, who was away from <br />the City. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its July ll, 1995 <br />meeting as circulated. <br /> <br />Under Business from the Floor, J. B. Travis, 401 Fifth Street, <br />expressed appreciation to the Public Works Department for removal of <br />large debris from the street in the West Side of the City. <br /> <br />Council considered a request by the City to rezone Lots25 and 26 at <br />1055 Brookdale Street, from R-9 Residential to C-1A Commercial. Wayne <br />Knox, Planning, Zoning & Housing Manager, explained the C-1A rezoning <br />would permit a greater variety of commercial development for the <br />property, which would be in keeping with the present character of the <br />area. Mr. Knox stated no response had been received from surrounding <br />property owners regarding the rezoning. Mr. Knox also stated that "in <br />order to assure compliance with Virginia Code Section 15.1-491(g), it <br />is stated that the public purposes for which these Resolutions are <br />initiated are to fulfill the requirements of public necessity, <br />convenience, general welfare, and good zoning practice". Mayor Adams <br />declared the public hearing open. There being no comment from persons <br />present, Mayor Adams declared the public hearing closed. Upon motion, <br /> <br /> <br />
