<br />304 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />OCTOBER 26. 1954 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />C~ty Hall, on Tuesday, October 26, 1954, at 7:30 P.M., with all members, as <br /> <br />follows, present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen C. P. <br /> <br />Craig, B. H. Hill, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held October 12, 1954, upon being read, <br /> <br />were approved. <br /> <br />Upon request of Mr. F. E. Taylor, Superintendent of the Shenandoah Division of <br /> <br />the Norfolk & Western Railway Company (see Mr. Taylor's of May 10, 1954), <br /> <br />Council granted permission to the Norfolk & Western Railway Company to <br /> <br />discontinue watchman service at the Broad Street crossing on Sundays. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council adopted with <br /> <br />emergency clause attached the following ordinance amending the City's <br /> <br />Amusement Tax Ordinance: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assmebled this 26th day of October, 1954 that <br />Sections 2 and 11 of the Amusement Tax Ordinance of the City of <br />Martinsville adopted April 27, 1948, and as amended, shall further <br />be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 2-TAX. With the exception of Section 11 of this <br />ordinance, a tax of one cent for every twenty cents, or <br />fraction thereof, of the amount paid for the admission to <br />any place of _amusement or entertainment is hereby levied <br />upon and shall be collected from every person who pays an <br />admission charge to such a place. If any person (except <br />those set forth in Section 9 of this ordinance) be admitted <br />free to any place of amusement or entertainment at any time <br />when an admission charge is made to other persons, an <br />equivalent tax is hereby levied upon and shall be collected <br />from such person so admitted free of an admission charge, <br />which tax shall be based on the price charged to such other <br />persons of the same class for the same or similar <br />accommodations. <br />
