<br />200 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 23, 1954 <br /> <br />The regular semi~onthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett preSiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br /> <br />City Hall, on TueSday, February 23, 1954, at 7:30 P.M., "lith all members, as <br /> <br /> <br />follows, being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen <br /> <br /> <br />C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular C01illcil meeting held January 26, 1954, upon being read, <br />were approved. <br /> <br />Before beginning its regular order of business, Council acknowledged the presence <br /> <br /> <br />of visitors, a number of whom were residents and property owners on South H1illdley <br /> <br /> <br />Street who called Council's attention to the surface drainage problems (on South <br /> <br /> <br />Hundley Street) caused in part by lack of curb and gutter. Council outlined its <br /> <br /> <br />policy with respect to curb-and-gutter ~titions and construction, pointing out <br /> <br /> <br />that no funds for this type of work were included in the current budget. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council approved for City <br /> <br />Manager Mathews on's signature a quit-claim deed to the American Furniture <br /> <br />Company, Inc. as a final step in the closing of a portion of Hairston Street west <br /> <br />of Starling Avenue (see Council minutes of January 26, 1954). <br /> <br />An ordinance, as placed on first reading January 26, 1954 and providing for the <br /> <br />levy and collection of motor vehicle license taxes for the City of Martinsville <br /> <br />and for the year beginning March 15, 1954 was, upon motion and duly seconded, <br /> <br />unanimously carried. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />r <br />
