TUESDAY PEER UARY 24, 1953 -- ( The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, February 24, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock P.M., the following members being present: Mayor and CounCilman R. S. Hodnett and Councilmen c. P. Craig, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker, - Councilman D. H. Goode being absent. /- Minutes of the regular Council meeting held February 10, 1953, upon being read, were approved. Upon motion, duly seconded, and unanimOUSly carried, the proposed Motor Vehicle .~ ~~ V' ~ (Auto) License Tax Ordinance, for the license tax year beginning March 15, 1953 and as placed on first reading February 10, 1953, was adopted. In receiving and accepting for the Council and the City of Martinsville an award from the National Fire Protective Association in recognition of the outstanding fire prevention program carried out during the calendar year 1952 by the local Fire Departm3nt (both paid and volunteer companies), as previously mentioned and described in the Council minutes of January 13, 1953, Mayor Hodnett expressed appre~iation both for the Council and for the citizens of the fine work being done by the Department and for the recognition gained for the City. Council acknowledged with. appreciation, also, the excellent annual report of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company for the calendar year 1952, in which the many important activities successfully carried on by the Company were described.
