18

TUESDAY

D:EX;EMBER 9. 1922

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber

on Tuesday, December 9, 1952, at 7:30 o'clock P.M., all members, as follows,

being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen C. P. Craig,

D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker.

Minutes of the regular Council meeting held November 26, 1952, upon being read,
were approved.

Council suspended its succeeding regular order of business to hear from Attorney

W. R. Broaddus, III, who, on behalf of the Chatham Heights Baptist Church (of

this City), presented a petition requesting that sections or portions of existing

streets adjacent to the Church's property be closed and/or relocated through the

exchanging of right-of-way by the City and the Church. This petition was referred

to the Planning Commission.

Upon invitation of Council, and in connection with a proposed bond election seeking

funds to complete the City's Waterworks Improvements Program, Mr. W. Martin

Johnson of the engineering consultants firm of Wiley and Wilson, Lynchburg,

Virginia, reviewed important phases of the program from its inception in 1946 to

the present time, emphasizing the need for the completion of said program as soon

as possible. Council, after discussing the matter further and after hearing

from any citizens present on the subject, instruc~ed City Attorne,y stone to prepare

such legal papers as are necessary to calling for a bond election, indicating

that a public hearing to discuss the matter further would be held on or near

February 1, 1953.
