Hodnett <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of I,Tartinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with all members being present, as follows: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett; <br /> <br />presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on jSarch 20,1956, at 7:30 P.M., <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor and Councilrnan C. P. Craig; and Councilmen 3. H. lIill, W. T.l'm.'ner, and <br /> <br />J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />".- <br /> <br />After the invocation by City Manager Mathewson, the Council approved, as read, the <br /> <br />minutes of its regular meeting held February 28, 1956. <br /> <br />A request from I1'1r. George Stultz for an extension of the City's water main to his new <br /> <br />residence on Swanson Stroet was referred to the Water-Street Division. <br /> <br />;~." <br />:;'2 <br />sS <br />::"z: <br />~ <br /> <br />After receiving the fOllowing report and recornnendations of the Planning Commission <br /> <br />regarding a proposed Urban Renewal Authority, Council requested that it be furnished <br /> <br />copies of said report and recorrnnendations for its furthr="r stUCIY and cons ideration: <br /> <br />Honorable I"~ayor and LIembers of Cit'.f Council <br />City of Martil1.sville <br />:D:Iartinsville, Vir;:;inia <br /> <br />Gentlemen: <br /> <br />Since the original request by you to the City Plill1ning Commission on <br />June 15th, 1955, to make a study into the flSave our DowntOlmfl Project, the <br />Commission :has spent co,1siderable time investige.t:Lng the need and the kinds <br />of corrective measures necessary to prevent traff::.c strangulation and the <br />threat of economic bli~;ht in our central area of the city. <br /> <br />Our investigatioCl of the matter now dictates t,,~e wisdon of engaging in <br />a further exploratory s t1J.dy of the l1lD.tter that would reveal more fully our <br />exact needs without commitinf, the city or its residents to any spending <br />program, or to the satisfaction of such needs. This exploratory work would <br />entail further planning studies, surveys, certain enCineering work, and, <br />above all, the ascertainmcmt of what cost livould be irwolved and what favor- <br />able benefits vwuld accrue to all of our citizens. <br />
