<br />3 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 23, 1972 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., presiding, was held in the Corporation <br /> <br />Courtroom (said meeting having been moved from the Council Chamber to <br /> <br />accommodate better the large number of citizens attending), City Hall, <br /> <br />Tuesday, May 23, 1972, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, <br /> <br />viz., Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Francis T. West, Vice Mayor; Harry L. Boaz; <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />W. Donald Hartford; and William Hobson. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meeting held May 9, 1972. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of the Planning Commission's recommendations <br /> <br />(dated April 21, 1972), on which consideration has been previously postponed <br /> <br />at the request of the Commission, proposing changes in certain street names <br /> <br />and, also, proposing names for certain new streets or sections thereof, as <br /> <br />fo llows : <br /> <br />(1) Route 57 relocation, from its ultimate extension eastward <br />to Church Street and the present Armory Road, be named <br />Commonwealth Boulevard; <br /> <br />(2) Lester Street, from the Route 57 relocation to Church Street, <br />be named Ellsworth Street; <br /> <br />(3) The ultimate extension of Ellsworth Street, from Church Street <br />southward (across Maple Street to Broad Street and thence along <br />Broad Street to Memorial Boulevard), be named Ellsworth Street; <br /> <br />(4) The short portion of Northside Drive, isolated by the Route 57 <br />relocation between Fairy Street and East Church Street, be <br />renamed to Cherry Street; and <br /> <br />(5) The portion of the Route 57 relocation, between present Armory <br />Road and Church Street and its ultimate extension to Memorial <br />Boulevard, be named Market Street. <br /> <br />In connection with the recommended renaming of what is now Lester Street, as <br /> <br />well as the proposed extension thereof to the Route 57 relocation project, <br /> <br />Mr. James B. Hall, Real Estate Manager of Lester Lumber Company, filed <br />
