l-l

TUESDAY

MAY 23, 1972

objections thereto, citing an 1891 map in support of the fact that Lester

Street has been a matter of record for many years and its name of historical

basis and, further, the adverse effect a changing of its name would have

upon legal records. After some discussion, Council directed that a

duly-advertised public hearing be conducted on this proposal at Council's

forthcoming June 27th meeting.

Mr. J. W. Jones, III, on behalf of himself and some twenth-eight other

owners and/or tenants of residential properties in the Cleveland Avenue-

Brown Street area, appeared before Council--along with many of these

citizens--and registered certain objections to the proposed locating of

a Regional Probation House in the area, specifically at the southwest

corner of Cleveland Avenue and Brown Street. Other objections raised by the petitioners pertained

to traffic congestion and the anticipated increase thereof, the cost of

purchasing and renovating the property (in which Council was apprised that

no public funds are involved), and certain anticipated environmental

conditions. Petitioners, however, indicated their hearty support of such

a project in principle and their willingness to assist in selecting a

location for same which would be feasible and would have the consent--as to

location--of surrounding property owners. The Honorable J. English Ford,

Judge of the Sixth Regional Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court, who--along

with interested citizens--appeared before Council on said April 25th and
