<br />t ~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JULY 24, 1973 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor Francis T. West presiding, was held Tuesday, July 24, 1973, in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, with the <br /> <br />exception of Councilman W. Donald Hartford (who was out of the City), viz., Francis <br /> <br />T. West, Mayor" Harry L. Boaz, Vice Mayor; William D. Hobson: and Morton W. Lester. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />~-' <br /> <br />meeting held July 10, 1973, and of its special meeting held July 13, 1973. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Noland and Assistant City Manager (& Public <br /> <br />Works Director) George W. Brown, Council awarded the City's 1973-74 street <br /> <br />resurfacing contract to Thompson-Arthur Paving Company, lowest bidder of the following <br /> <br />three bids received for the following quantities, of which bid the City School <br /> <br />System would pay $11,472.00 for work on school properties and the City would pay <br /> <br />$38,624.00 for street work, with the City's portion being within funds allocated <br /> <br />for this purpose: <br /> <br />BIDDER <br />Thompson-Arthur Paving Company . <br />Adams Construction Company . . . <br />Virginia Asphalt Paving Company <br /> <br />AMOUNT <br />$ 50,096.34; <br />62,153.51; and <br />70,115.60. <br /> <br />Quantities <br />10,756 sq. yds. double seal (surface treatment) @ 35~ per sq. yd.; <br />550 sq. yds. prime & double seal (surface treatment) @ 56~ per sq. yd.; <br />3,895 tons Type S-5 (plant-mix) @ $10.68 per ton; and <br />12,029 sq. yds. Slurry seal @ 27~~ per sq. yd. <br /> <br />With reference to addendum to minutes of Council's special meeting held July 13, 1973, <br />Mr. Jesse D. Clift, Clerk of Martinsville City Circuit Court, appeared before Council <br />and requested permission to discontinue the opening of his office for public business <br />on Saturday mornings, noting that the presiding judges of the 21st Judicial Circuit-- <br />from whom permission is also required--are in accord with this request, after having <br />already given due notice thereof to the president of the Martinsvi11e-Henry County <br />Bar Association and having received no objections from anyone to the proposed closing. <br />
