.~4

TUESDAY

JULY 24, 1973

Mr. J. Randolph Smith, Jr., Attorney at Law and Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney

for the City, appeared in opposition to the proposed closing, informing Council

that the bar association has not considered this matter officially or as a group

and, furthermore, inconvenience to attorneys and to the public--in his opinion--

would result from such closing. After some discussion, and noting that not only

have the presiding judges indicated approval of this request but also no other

objections (other than those registered by Attorney Smith) have been received,

and in anticipation of no real inconvenience resulting from said closing, Council

unanimously approved Mr. Clift's request.

Council also approved City Treasurer John W. Bouldin's request that he be

permitted to close his office similarly.

Mr. George Newcomb, President of the Martinsville Jaycees, along with other

officials and members of this organization, appeared before Council and indicated

that this group fully supports the concept of the Central Business District renewal

plan and what it entails, meanwhile offering the assistance--which Council gratefully

acknowledged--of his organization toward disseminating information thereon to the

public. Mr. Newcomb also presented a printed plan of internal programs and external

programs being directed and/or sponsored by the Jaycees for the year 1973-74.

Council was adjourned.

~"'" S"~
W.
