82 TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 1983 The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor William C. Cole, Jr., presiding, was held Tuesday, September 27, 1983, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, as follows: William C. Cole, Jr., Mayor; L. D. Oakes, Vice-Mayor; Henry C. Reed; Eliza H. Severt; and Francis T. West. After the invocation, followed by Mayor Cole's cordial welcome to visitors present, Council unanimously approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting held September 13, 1983. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council adopted the following resolution, as presented through Mr. Thomas H. Leath (of Townes Furniture, Inc.), designating the month of October, 1983, as "Home Furnishings Month": WHEREAS, people today are spending more leisure time at home and as a result are looking for ways to upgrade their homes' appear- ance, value and livability; and WHEREAS, quality furniture can be considered an investment--an "heirloom of the future"; and WHEREAS, household furniture, because its costs have risen more slowly than other consumer goods, is a better value today than ever before; and WHEREAS, participating furniture retailers in Virginia and across the nation this month are offering even greater values during NATIONAL HOME FURNISHINGS MONTH; and WHEREAS, the Honorable Charles Robb, Governor of the Commonwealth, has proclaimed the month of October as "Home Furnishings Month" in Virginia; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, on this 27th day of September, 1983, does hereby proclaim the month of October, 1983, as "Home Furnishings Month" in the City of Martinsville, in recognition of the coordinated efforts of fur- niture manufacturers and retailers to present furniture values to the public and of the special events scheduled for this purpose.
