<br />41 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST 28, 1984 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />with Mayor William C. Cole, Jr., presiding, was held Tuesday, August 28, 1984, in the <br /> <br />Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M., all members being present, viz., <br /> <br />William C. Cole, Jr., Mayor; Eliza H. Severt, Vice-Mayor; Alfred T. Groden; L. D. <br /> <br />Oakes; and Clyde L. Williams. <br /> <br />Preceding the invocation and Mayor Cole's cordial welcome to visitors present was, at <br /> <br />Mayor Cole's request, a moment of silent prayer in memory of Mr. Robert S. Johnson, who <br /> <br />resided at 1161 Yorkshire Road and whose unexpected death occurred recently, Mr. Johnson <br /> <br />being remembered for his keen interest in local governmental affairs and his often <br /> <br />attendance at Council meetings. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council approved--as recorded--the <br /> <br />minutes of its regular meeting held August 14, 1984. <br /> <br />In tentative acceptance of the Planning Commission's recommendation that a section of <br /> <br />Lincoln Street, situated between Letcher Street and Swanson Street, be closed and <br /> <br />abandoned, as recently requested by Mr. & Mrs. Irvin S. Hairston (of 513 Letcher Street), <br /> <br />Council unanimously directed that a duly-advertised public hearing be conducted on this <br /> <br />proposal and request at Council's forthcoming September 11th meeting. <br /> <br />.- <br /> <br />Council also called for a duly-advertised public hearing to be conducted at its forth- <br /> <br />coming September 11th meeting on an updated City Comprehensive Plan (including the <br /> <br />City's Land-Use Plan), as recently prepared by the Planning Commission. Representing <br /> <br />the Planning Commission was Mr. James H. Ford, Chairman, who cited certain regulatory <br />
