Enclosure #3

Martinsville
A CITY WITHOUT LIMITS

July 31, 2000

The Honorable Mayor and City Council
City of Martinsville
Martinsville, Virginia

Council Members:

The Planning Commission, at its regular meeting on July 20, 2000, conducted a public
hearing on a request from City Staff, to amend Section VI. General Sign Regulations,
Paragraph C. Permitted Signs, and Paragraph N., Permitted Signs in Districts, of the
Zoning Ordinance. The proposed amendment places all sign regulations in one location
of the ordinance and changes the total surface area of real estate signs.

At the Public Heating it was explained the Zoning Ordinance currently allows real estate
signs not exceeding eight (8) square feet in area. The proposed amendment allows a
combined total surface area not exceeding five (5) square feet, plus five (5) square feet
for each one hundred fifty (150) feet of lot line adjacent to a public street.

Following discussion of the proposed amendment, in which no opposition was expressed,
the Planning Commission voted unanimously (5-0) to recommend to City Council that
the Zoning Ordinance be amended as proposed (see attachment). The Planning
Commission respectfully submits the above request for Council's further consideration.

Sincerely,

Jean P. Wilson, Secretary

Wayne D. P.
