Council Member Haskell moved to adopt <br /> <br />the following Resolution as presented; the motion was duly seconded and carried by the <br /> <br />following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, <br /> <br />Haske!l, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None: <br /> <br />-7 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the polling place of Voting Precinct No. 4 in the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, is located in the front lobby of Martinsville High <br />School on Commonwealth Boulevard; and <br />WHEREAS, this has interfered with the efficient operation of <br />Martinsville High School resulting in a need to relocate the polling <br />place for Voting Precinct No. 4 from the front lobby of Martinsville <br />High School to the auditorium lobby at Martinsville High School; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Electoral Board has requested such a voting <br />change; and <br />WHEREAS, the Voting Rights Act requires approval by the U.S. <br />Department of Justice of this voting change; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> in regular session assembled on May 9, 2000, that the polling place <br /> of Voting Precinct No. 4 in the City of Martinsville be, and it hereby is, <br /> changed from the front lobby of Martinsville High School to the <br /> auditorium lobby of Martinsville High School on Commonwealth <br /> Boulevard, in the City of Martinsville, Virginia; and <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution shall not take effect <br /> until it is approved by the U. S. Department of Justice; and <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Attorney be, and he <br /> hereby is, authorized and directed to apply to the Civil Rights <br /> Division, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C., for such <br /> approval. <br /> <br />Council considered nominations to the Virginia Municipal League's 2000 Policy <br /> <br />Committees.
