Adoption of state law as to driving while intoxicated. <br /> <br />~. <br /> <br />Pursuant to the provisions of section 46.2-1313 and section 1-13.39:2 ofthe Code of Virginia, <br />a1l of the provisions and requirements ofthe laws of the state relating to driving or operating <br />a motor vehicle, engine, or train, while intoxicated contained in article 2 of chapter 7 of title <br />18.2 of the Code of Virginia (18.2-266 et seq.), which are in effect on July 1, 1993 and a1l <br />amendments to such laws adopted by the state subsequent to July 1, 1993, are hereby adopted <br />and made part of this chapter, as fu1ly as though set out herein verbatim and are hereby made <br />applicable within the city. Any references made to "the state" or "the commonwealth" in <br />connection with highways, streets, roads, alleys, or other places of vehicular travel sha1l be <br />deemed to refer to the city. Any future amendment made to a state statute incorporated by this <br />section sha1l become effective in the city on the same date as the effective date of the state law <br />amendment. General duties of police with respect to traffic. <br /> <br />It shall be the duty ofthe chief of police, the officers of the police department and such other <br />officers as are assigned by the chief of police to enforce the provisions of this chapter and the <br />state vehicle laws applicable to traffic in the city; to make arrests for traffic violations and <br />infractions; to assist in the prosecution of persons charged with such violations and infractions; <br />to investigate accidents; to cooperate with the traffic engineer and other officials of the city in <br />the administration of this chapter and in developing ways and means to improve traffic <br />conditions; and to carry out those duties specifically imposed by this chapter and other <br />ordinances of the city relative to traffic. <br />(Code 1971, ~ 10-153) <br /> <br />Sec. 12-5. Deputizing persons to direct traffic. <br /> <br />r'\ <br />I <br /> <br />(a) The chief of police may deputize persons over the age of eighteen (18) years, without the <br />power of arrest, for the limited purpose of directing traffic in accordance with section 46.2-1309 <br />ofthe Code of Virginia during periods of heavy traffic or congestion, provided such persons firsr <br />receive such training as the chief of police determines necessary to fu1ly acquaint them with <br />the techniques of traffic control. <br /> <br />Supp. No. 57 <br /> <br />717 <br />
