FIRE PREVENTION AND PROTECTION § 9-14 <br /> <br /> (3) Exceed the prima facie speed limit so long as the action does not endanger life or <br /> property. <br /> <br /> (4) Disregard regulations governing the direction of movement of vehicles or tuning in <br /> specified directions. <br /> <br /> (d) The exemptions granted by this section to a moving vehicle shall apply only when the <br />operator of such vehicle displays a flashing, blinking or alternating red light and sounds a <br />siren, exhaust whistle or air horn designed to give automatically intermittent signals, as may <br />be reasonably necessary, and only when there is in force and effect for such vehicle either: <br /> <br /> (1) Standard automobile liability insurance covering injury or death to any person in the <br /> sum of at least one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) because of bodily injury to <br /> or death of one person in any one accident and, subject to the limit for one person, to a <br /> limit of three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000.00) because of bodily injury to or <br /> death of two (2) or more persons in any one accident, and to a limit of ten thousand <br /> dollars ($10,000.00)because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any <br /> one accident; or <br /> <br /> (2) A certificate of self-insurance issued pursuant to section 46.1-395 of the Code of <br /> Virginia. <br /> <br /> (e) The exemptions granted by this section shall not protect the operator of an authorized <br />emergency vehicle from criminal prosecution for conduct constituting reckless disregard of <br />the safety of persons and property. Nothing in this section shall be construed to release the <br />operator of any such vehicle from civil liability for failure to use reasonable care in such <br />operation. <br /> (Ord. of 10-26-82, §§ 8, 9) <br /> State law reference--Similar provisions, Code of Virginia, § § 46.1-199, 46.1-226. <br /> <br />Sec. 9-13. Duty of drivers of other vehicles upon approach of authorized emergency <br /> vehicle. <br /> <br /> (a) Upon the approact~ of any authorized emergency vehicle, as defined in section 9-12, <br />giving audible and :visual signal, the operator of every other vehicle shall immediately drive <br />the same to a position as near as possible and parallel to the right-hand edge or curb of the <br />street or roadway, clear of any intersection, and shall stop and remain in such position until <br />the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, unless othersvise directed by the fire chief or a <br />police officer. <br /> <br /> (b) A violation of this section shall constitute a traffic infraction. <br />(Ord. of 10-26-82, § 10) <br /> Cross reference--Penalty for traffic infraction, § Lll. <br /> State law reference--Similar provisions, Code of Virginia, § 46.1-225. <br /> <br />Sec. 9-14.
