March 9, 2000 <br /> <br />A special, work session meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br /> <br />was held with the Martinsville City School Board on March 9, 2000, at Albert Harris <br /> <br />School, beginning at 12:10 P. M., with Mayor Mark Crabtree presiding. Council <br /> <br />Members present included: Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor; M. Gene Teague, Vice Mayor; <br /> <br />and Council Members Bruce H. T. Dallas, Elizabeth H. Haskell, and Terry L. Roop. <br /> <br />The invocation was given by School Board Member Bernie F. Gray, Jr., and <br /> <br />followed with lunch. <br /> <br />Dr. Ira Trollinger, Superintendent, stated, "Thank you for coming to look at the <br /> <br />Albert Harris project first-hand. I anticipate that by April 14, two-thirds of the project will <br /> <br />be finished, including one-third of the classrooms. We are four months behind the <br /> <br />original schedule." Dr. Trollinger continued with highlights of the Albert Harris School <br /> <br />project, <br /> <br />"1 - classrooms are organized around grade level neighborhoods <br />at third, fourth, and fifth grades; 2 - each grade level has its own <br />science demonstration room, computer lab, and counselor/testing <br />area; 3 - each classroom has a minimum of five computer stations <br />and television access; 4 - the new media center has <br />student/teacher computer stations as well as automated book <br />service; 5 - a full-size auditorium and gymnasium; 6 - a new <br />cafeteria based on caf~-style seating; 7 - a new administrative <br />complex; 8 - the new fine arts center includes a band room, choral <br />room, and art studio; 9 - the school is handicapped accessible <br />utilizing two elevators; 10 -the parents are helping by providing a <br />new playground, wall murals, and picnic shelter; and 11 -the <br />school has a sprinkler system for fire safety." <br /> <br />Joan Montgomery, Albert Harris School Principal, added, "Each classroom will <br /> <br />have telephone access to the media center. Each teacher will. have his/her own <br /> <br />computer at his/her desk. Also, parent and bus traffic will be separated." Bill Lester, <br /> <br /> <br />
