February 22, 2000 <br /> <br />was duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - <br /> <br />0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haske!!, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> <br />Council recognized the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce for <br /> <br />sponsoring the Business 2000 Trade Show. The following proclamation was presented <br /> <br />to Kim Adkins, Executive Vice President: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Martinsvilte-Henry County Chamber of Commerce <br />is sponsoring a Business Trade Show in Martinsville/Henry County; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, all 121 booths have already been pre-sold; the Trade <br />Show will elevate consumer and business confidence and 'improve <br />community pride; and <br />WHEREAS, the Business Trade Show will increase awareness <br />among young people in the community by revealing career <br />opportunities in Martinsville/Henry County; and <br />WHEREAS, the Trade Show will encourage businesses to network <br />with one another and showcase the products and services ready to <br />meet the needs of today's demanding consumers within the <br />community, nationally and globally;' and <br />WHEREAS, the Trade Show will have a positive impact on new <br />business development and the creation of jobs, now, therefore, <br />On behalf of the Martinsville City Council, I, Mark A Crabtree, <br />Mayor, do hereby proclaim MarchT-9, 2000, as <br />BUSINESS 2000 TRADE SHOW WEEK <br />in the City and urge all the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County <br />to support this very important activity for our community by visiting <br />the Trade Show and by buying products and services locally in <br />Martinsville/Henry County. <br /> <br />Council recognized James Robinson, the new Chaplain of the Good News Jail <br /> <br />and Prison Ministry. Mr. Robinson stated, "Our goal is to break the cycle of crime, one <br /> <br />life at a time. Sheriff Steve Draper has told me that it costs $24,000 to maintain one <br /> <br />inmate for one year and the return rate is approximately72%. We could save millions <br /> <br />of dollars by stopping the recycling." <br /> <br />Council recognized Lieutenant Erik Nickell of the Salvation Army. Lt. Nickell <br /> <br />stated, "Regarding the Emergency Relief Fund, we've helped 73 displaced textile <br /> <br /> <br />
