50 <br /> <br />February 8, 2000 <br /> <br /> City Manager Reynolds stated, "In an attempt to support the Textile Employees <br />Relief Act, three buses will travel to Richmond tomorrow. The Constitutional Officers <br />and staffs are sponsoring one bus. We received a note of thanks from Delegate [Ward] <br />Armstrong for the City's participation last time. Also, Central Piedmont Health Services <br />has been awarded a grant of $1.23,000 from the Virginia Health Care Foundation to <br />open a medical facility in Martinsviile or Henry County which would offer medical care to <br />the uninsured. The anticipated date of opening is early spring. Until then, patients may <br />utilize their other site, Sandy River Medical Center, in Axton. Erik Nickell, of the <br />Salvation Army, has reported that they are continuing to make allocations for displaced <br />workers, but money is running slim. Now is the time for the City to make a financial <br />contribution. Council Member Haskell asked, "A City donation might leverage other <br />financial supporters. How will the money be spent?" City Manager Reynolds replied, <br />"Assistance with rent payments, utility bills, and medical expenses." Vice Mayor <br />Teague moved to donate $30,000 to the Salvation Army from the Enterprise Refuse <br />fund; the motion was duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members <br />voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haskeli, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - <br />None. Council Member Roop requested that Lieutenant Nickell attend a Council <br />meeting and present an update. Buddy Eanes, of the Mission Center, stated, "We are <br />also more than happy to assist those in need through our clothes closet, food pantry, <br />and soup kitchen." <br /> <br /> Council Member Haskell stated, 'Tm very distressed about the Governor's <br /> opposition to the Tultex relief effort.
