,2 <br /> <br />August 24, 1999 <br /> <br />Tony Rinaldi, Leisure Services and Facilities- Mr. Rinaldi shared the <br /> following summer statistics: 775 adults played softball; eight 8- <br /> year-old baseball teams; seven 9- and 10-year-old baseball teams; <br /> three 11 - and 12-year-old baseball teams; 1,969 youths <br /> participated in the Summer Play Camp, lasting seven weeks for 6- <br /> to 12-year-olds; BB&T Bank is co-sponsoring a softball tournament, <br /> August 28 - 29, 1999; and professional boxing in the City is in the <br /> early planning stages. <br />Jerry Brock, Fire Department - Chief Brock stated that the William Slate <br /> Memorial Scholarship was started this year, giving $300 to a child <br /> of a City employee attending Patrick Henry Community College. It <br /> is named for the former City Shop employee. <br />Chris Whirlow, City Planner - Mr. Whitlow stated that a Mass Transit <br /> Program Advisory Committee had been formed to study the <br /> possibility of mass transit in the area. The purpose of the study is <br /> to review potential riders, potential routes, etc. The target date to <br /> complete the study is January/February 2000. A representative is <br /> requested from each governing body. Council Member Dallas <br /> stated, "A progressive city has a mass transit system." Vice Mayor <br /> Teague moved to appoint Council Member Dallas to the Mass <br /> Transit Program Advisory Committee; the motion was duly <br /> seconded and carried by the following vote, with all present <br /> members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, <br /> Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None; Absent (0) - None. <br />Thomas Harned, Community Development - Mr. Harned stated that he <br />had recently attended a meeting of the Roanoke Regional <br />Transportation Committee. He said that it was reported at this <br />meeting that no one west of Richmond attended the first meeting of <br />the Governors Commission on Transportation. The second <br />meeting will be Monday, August 30, 1999, 9:00 A. M., General <br />Assembly Building, Room D. <br />John Dyches, Water Resources - Mr. Dyches stated that the Beaver <br /> Creek Reservoir level was 80 ~" below the spillway overflow, which <br /> is be. lpw the arbitrary 72" level historically designated for the City to <br /> instigate' requests for voluntary conservation. Council Member <br /> Haskell asked, "What would be good performance?" Mr. Dyches <br /> replied, "No watering of lawns; no watering of shubbery and flower <br /> gardens. Conservative watering of food gardens is allowed. No <br /> filling of installed or portable swimming pools. No filling of <br /> construction tank trucks. No washing of cars at home. No washing <br /> of pavement or structures. No running dishwashers or clothes <br /> washers with less than a full load. Tank truck may be filled from <br /> HCPSA's Philpott Water plan service area after obtaining a <br /> withdrawal permit from the HCPSA. 10% would be good." Council <br /> Member Haskell added that good notification and information <br /> system is essential to the City residents. By general consensus, <br /> <br /> <br />
