,I <br /> <br />January 25,2000 <br /> <br />playground. facilities and the' establishment of a yeaRround <br />recreational program for all ages; and <br />WHEREAS, the Association works with the City of Martinsville <br />Department of Leisure Services and other City departments in <br />making improvements in .the area of recreational programs, parks, <br />playground facilities and the acquisition of land for construction of <br />recreational facilities where needed; and <br />WHEREAS, over the past 30 years interested lay people have <br />contributed their time, energy, money and cooperation in achieving <br />the goals of the Association; and <br />WHEREAS, Association members have also contributed many hours <br />of volunteer service during events such as basketball tournaments, <br />which have helped to raise over $750,000; and <br />WHEREAS, one such toumament held everyy year for the past 18 <br />years is the Patrick Henry National Bank Classic, a youth basketball <br />tournament; now, therefore, <br />I, Mark A. Crabtree, Mayor of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, do <br />hereby proclaim January 2840, 2000, as <br />PATRICK HENRY NATIONAL BANK CLASSIC DAYS <br />in the City of Martinsville and urge all the citizens of Martinsville and <br />Henry County to support this basketball event in order to continue <br />the development of park and playground facilities and to continue a <br />year-round recreational program for all ages. <br /> <br />Mr. Varn stated, "The tournament will host 44 teams, including every team from <br /> <br />last year', from Virginia and North Carolina. The support of the City and County is <br /> <br />required ." <br /> <br />Council Member Haskell moved to approve, as presented, the Minutes of the <br /> <br />January 11, 2000, meeting; the motion was duly seconded and carried by the following <br /> <br />vote, with all. members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, Roop, <br /> <br />Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> <br />Mayor Crabtree introduced Kim Adkins, new Executive Vice President of the <br /> <br />Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Adkins stated, 'Tm pleased to <br /> <br />announce that the trade show will return, March 6 - 8, in the former Harris Teeter <br /> <br />building. Pre-registration is full at 120." Council Member Haskell stated, "lt's a big <br /> <br /> <br />
