<br />CITY OF MARTINSVILLE, VIRGINIA
<br />
<br />WFIEREAS, by its ordinance numbered 91-4 enacted on October 23, 1991, Martinsville City Council
<br />ordalned that council members should be compensated at a certain sum for each regular or special
<br />meeting attended, said compensation not to exceed the sum of $7,000.00 annually for the Mayor and
<br />$6,500.00 for Council Members; and
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, §15.2-1414.5 of the Code of Virginia, which became effective on October 1, 1998, does not
<br />permit a council member to be compensated at a fixed sum for each meeting attended, but requires that
<br />each member of council of each city shall be paid an annual salary in equal monthly installments for their
<br />services in attending the meetings of the council and in discharging the other duties imposed by law upon
<br />council members; now, therefore,
<br />
<br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session held on June
<br />__, 1999, that the Mayor shall be compensated at an annual salary of $6,660.00 payable in 12 monthly
<br />installments of $555.00 commencing on the 1a day of July, 1999 and on the 1a day of each succeeding
<br />month thereafter for the remainder of the fiscal year and for each fiscal year thereat~er until this ordinance
<br />is amended, and that each Member of Council shall be compensated at an annual salary of $5,460.00
<br />payable in 12 equal monthly installments of $455.00 commencing on the 1~t day of July, 1999 and on the
<br />1 ~t day of each succeeding month thereafter for the remainder of the fiscal year and for each fiscal year
<br />thereafter until this ordinance is amended; and
<br />
<br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that an emergency exists and that this ordinance shall become effective
<br />on and after June 30, 1999.

<br />assembled June 22, 1999, that the following sums of money be and hereby are appropriated--by
