TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1988 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in the case of telephone companies, charges for long <br />distance telephone calls shall not be included in gross receipts <br />for purposes of license taxation; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular session assembled held on November 8, 1988, <br />that the City's Business, Professional, Occupational License Tax <br />Ordinance, 1983, as amended, be amended so that Section2 under <br />Article II thereof shall read as follows: <br /> <br />2. PUBLIC UTILITIES. <br /> <br /> (a) Any person, firm, or corporation who shall engage in <br />the business of furnishing heat, light and power, whether by <br />means of electricity or gas, in the City shall pay a license <br />tax equal to one-half of one percent of the gross annual <br />receipts accruing from sales to the ultimate consumer in the <br />City, provided, however, that there shall be deducted any sum <br />or sums paid by such person, firm or corporation to the City as <br />license taxes except motor vehicle license taxes. <br /> <br /> (b) Any telegraph or telephone company doing business in <br />the City, for the privilege of doing business therein, shall <br />pay a license tax equal to one-half of one percent of the gross <br />annual receipts accruing from sales to the ultimate consumer in <br />the City, provided, however, that char~oos for long distance <br />calls shall not be considered receipt f such business in the <br />City. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council authorized City <br />Manager Brown to execute, on behalf of the City, a lease agreement with the law <br />firm of Young, Haskins, Mann, & Gregory, 60 West Church Street, Martinsville, <br />Virginia, lessor, by which lessor's adjoining private parking lot will be <br />developed by the City in conjunction with proposed development of City property <br />as a motor vehicle off-street parking facility, pursuant to a parking plan <br />dated January 30, 1987, as prepared by the City's Engineering Division. For <br />the improvements to be constructed by the City on the private property, lessor <br />will reimburse the City for the cost thereof. In addition, of the twenty-four <br />parking spaces to be provided on the private property section, lessor will have <br />sole use of eighteen of such spaces, at no rent; nor will there beany charge <br />to the City for the property being leased; however, the construction, <br /> <br /> <br />
