TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1988 A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, August 23, 1988, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of Council were present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams,.Vice-Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain. After the invocation, followed by a cordial welcome being extended by Mayor Oakes to visitors present, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its regular meeting held August 9, 1988. In connection with the approaching conclusion of the first season (after an absence of many years) of organized professional baseball in Martinsville, Council issued the following statement of recognition and appreciation: As we approach the end of the first season of organized baseball in Martinsville and Henry County, after many years absence, we, the members of Martinsville City Council, individually and collectively, take this means of recognizing--and expressing appreciation to--individuals and organizations who were instrumental in bringing our "National Past-Time" back to our area for the enjoyment by our citizens and community. Some of these principals were, and are: Messrs. A. Frank Hooker, Sr., J. Clyde Hooker, Jr., A. F. Hooker, Jr., and others of their associates, plus Hooker Furniture Corporation, who for many years have significantly contributed to the well-being of our community through various avenues but, especially, through making English Field available for organized recreational activities; Mr. J. Dennis Bastien, President of the 'Martinsville Phillies", and his associates; Mr. Tim Cahill, Manager of the Martinsville Phillies; the Philadelphia Phillies organization; and the Appalachian Baseball League;
