TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1988 <br /> <br />A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, with Mayor L. D. Oakes presiding, was held Tuesday, August 23, 1988, <br />in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M. All members of <br />Council were present, viz., L. D. Oakes, Mayor; Clyde L. Williams,.Vice-Mayor; <br />William C. Cole, Jr.; Alfred T. Groden; and Allan McClain. <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by a cordial welcome being extended by Mayor <br />Oakes to visitors present, Council approved--as recorded--the minutes of its <br />regular meeting held August 9, 1988. <br /> <br />In connection with the approaching conclusion of the first season (after an <br />absence of many years) of organized professional baseball in Martinsville, <br />Council issued the following statement of recognition and appreciation: <br /> <br />As we approach the end of the first season of organized baseball in <br />Martinsville and Henry County, after many years absence, we, the <br />members of Martinsville City Council, individually and collectively, <br />take this means of recognizing--and expressing appreciation <br />to--individuals and organizations who were instrumental in bringing <br />our "National Past-Time" back to our area for the enjoyment by our <br />citizens and community. <br /> <br />Some of these principals were, and are: <br /> <br />Messrs. A. Frank Hooker, Sr., J. Clyde Hooker, Jr., A. <br />F. Hooker, Jr., and others of their associates, plus <br />Hooker Furniture Corporation, who for many years have <br />significantly contributed to the well-being of our <br />community through various avenues but, especially, <br />through making English Field available for organized <br />recreational activities; <br /> <br />Mr. J. Dennis Bastien, President of the 'Martinsville <br />Phillies", and his associates; Mr. Tim Cahill, Manager <br />of the Martinsville Phillies; the Philadelphia <br />Phillies organization; and the Appalachian Baseball <br />League; <br /> <br /> <br />
