FRIDAY, JULY 1, 1988 <br /> <br />Pursuant to the requirements of Sections 5 and 7 of Chapter 2 of the Charter of <br />the City of Martinsville, a special meeting of the Council of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, was held Friday, July 1, 1988, in the Council Chambers, <br />City Hall, beginning at 9:00 A.M., for the purpose of having newly-elected <br />members of Council (viz., Messrs. Alfred T. Groden, L. D. Oakes, and Clyde L. <br />Willjams, incumbents who were re-elected to membership on the Council at the <br />councilmanic election held May 10, 1988, for four-year terms beginning July 1, <br />1988) subscribe to the required oaths of office, and for the purpose of <br />electing a Mayor and Vice-Mayor for two-year terms beginning July 1, 1988. All <br />members of Council were present, being Messrs. William C. Cole, Jr., Alfred T. <br />Groden, Allan McClain, L. D. Oakes, and Clyde L. Williams. Presiding at this <br />meeting and administering the required oaths of office was Mr. Ashby R. <br />Pritchett, Clerk of Martinsville City Circuit Court. <br /> <br />After the invocation by Dr. Dwight O. Christenbury, Pastor of the First <br />Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, Mr. Pritchett administered oaths of <br />office, individually, to Councilmanic Groden, Oakes, and Williams. <br /> <br />There being no nominations for the positions of Mayor and Vice-Mayor for the <br />next two years other than for Councilmen Oakes and Willjams, respectively, who <br />have just completed two-year terms in these positions, respectively, Messrs. <br />Oakes and Willjams were unanimously (and by acclamation) re-elected Mayor and <br />Vice-Mayor, respectively; whereupon each subscribed to the required oaths of <br />office and each acknowledged with appreciation their again being chosen by <br />their fellow members for these positions as well as their willingness to <br />continue therein and to serve the citizens of Martinsville to the best of their <br />abilities. <br /> <br /> <br />
