TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1988

select the direction in which the City should go and, too, should give better
guidance to the City Manager. Council agreed, meanwhile, to exert efforts,
along with the City School Bo. ard and other interested persons, toward obtaining
more State funding for local education and social services; whereas, Mayor
Oakes cited the need, in his opinion, to consider expanding the-City's (GEneral
Fund) revenue base.

i
Pursuant to the requirements of subsection (a)(1) of Section 2.1-344 of the

CODEOF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), and upon motion, duly seconded and
unanimously carried by a recorded vote, Council convened into an Executive
Session for the purpose of considering salaries for 1988-89 of certain
officials who are not subject to the City's pay plan. At the conclusion of
this session, Council reconvened into regular session where, upon motions, duly
seconded and unanimously carried, Council directed that compensation of the
City Attorney be increased (in '1988-89) over the current year by six per centum
(6%), effective July 1, 1988, and that the annual salary of the City Manager be
increased effective July 1, 1988, by $4,500 (from the present annual rate of
$55,000 to a 1988-89 rate of $59,500).

Council indicated that at its forthcoming May 10th regular meeting it will set
a date for a duly-advertised public hearing to be conducted on the proposed
1988-89 City Budget, as heretofore amended.

Mayor Oakes then declared this meeting adjourned.

H~.~Ye'~n,C~~erk of Council
