Ronnie Minter, the
City's Commissioner of the Revenue, in which tax relief for qualifying elderly
and/or disabled property owners, during the years 1982 through 1988, amounted
to a high of $15,402.30 (for 1988) and a low of $9,725.66 (for 1982). The
number of qualifying applicants ranged from 124 in 1987 to 167 in 1983.

In receiving the (1987) Annual Report of the Martinsville Volunteer Fire
Company, presented by Mr. Bill Hooper (now past President) and Mr. Jimmy Ussery
(current President), Council commended this organization and its members for
the outstanding service rendered the City and its citizens over the years
(since 1949) by the Volunteer Fire Company.

At the request of the City's Electoral Board, represented at this meeting by
its Secretary, Mr. Arne R. Christensen, Council unanimously appropriated (from
General Fund surplus) the sum of $2,220.97 for salary and fringe benefits for
the month of June for the successor to Miss Gloria Vass, City Registrar, who
will retire as of June 30, 1988, during which month the appointee-successor
will be in training. Council also authorized an increase in the per diem
(i.e., per election) compensation of precinct election officials from $45.00 to
$50.00 as well as an increase in each precinct official's election-day meal
allowance from $4.00 to $5.00; and there being some forty (40) such officials
and two elections scheduled between now and June 30, 1988, the sum required
(from General Fund surplus)will be approximately $480.00 for the remainder of
the current fiscal year.
