TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1988

thereto (including utility lines) under the terms and conditions of the City's
Subdivision Ordinance, which street will serve as the main entrance-and-exit
road for the site of Dorn-Will's proposed nursing home facility.

Council unanimously approved and authorized the filing of an application, for
and on behalf of the Martinsville Transportation Safety Commission, for a
"mini-grant" in the sum of $1,200.00 to finance the cost of twenty (20) "Buckle
Up" signs to promote safety as well as compliance with new State statutory
requirements. It was the Council's understanding that mounting, erecting, and
maintenance of these signs would be the City's responsibility.

Council unanimously authorized the preparation of a fee simple deed by which, at
the request of the Virginia Museum of Natural History and its Director, Dr. Noel
T. Boaz, all of the former Joseph Martin School property, including that portion
presently occupied by the Museum (and previously deeded to the Virginia Museum
of Natural History Foundation by Council's action taken October 14, 1986 -- see
page 392 of Minute Book No. 25), as well as the remaining portion of the site,
including an "annex" building currently occupied by the New River Regional
Police Academy, would be conveyed to the VMNH Foundation in order that, with the
conveyance by the Foundation of this property to the Commonwealth of Virginia on
or before July 1, 1988, the Museum will officially become the Commonwealth's
Museum of Natural History and will be State-funded for the 1988-90 biennium, for
which $7.7 million has been requested. Dr. Boaz reported that the value of the
property can be counted as ~ part of the required matching with non-state funds
and that the remaining matching funds will come from contributions, grants, and
