The health services provided by the local Health Department, in
my opinion, are excellent.

Rescue and Ambulance Service

Over the years Martinsville has been fortunate in having an
efficient volunteer ambulance'service which has been augmented
by private service at varying times. Recognizing the importance
of ths. serviceto the community and ~-the need to upgrade this
service as needed, the City and Henry County governments joined
in conducting a study of such services. The matter is now under
review by the local Rescue Squads, the City and County govern-
ments and it is anticipated that positive steps will be taken to
provide improved services in this area as deemed appropriate.
It should be noted that, while the Rescue Squads have provided
over many years a very valuable and efficient service to the
community, they are continually searching for ways and means of
improving this service and were, therefore, very supportive of
the Study of Emergency Services for the City and County.

Parks and Recreation

The City's Parks and Recreation program is one of the best
programs of any community of our size in the Commonwealth.
Considerable investment has been made over the past years in
providing well-designed facilties needed to implement the Parks
and Recreation Department's programs. In addition to our
regular programs that provide many recreational opportunities
for the youth and adults of the community, the addition of the
Martinsville Phillies has added greatly to the overall recrea-
tion program of the City.

Churches

There are many religious facilities in the community that pro-
vide for the spiritual needs of the citizens which are also very
community oriented and are of great benefit to the community.

Arts, Culture, and History

The recent addition of the Virginia Museum of Natural History
has added greatly to the community, along with the opportunities
offered by Piedmont Arts Association. The land and facilities
were made available to the Museum by the City at no cost. The
recent construction of the Walker Fine Arts Center at Patrick
Henry Community College will add greatly to the cultural
opportunities of our area.

There is interest in providing a community or civic center for
the area. A committee has been studying the feasibility of such
a project and a report will be submitted shortly to the Council
and SchoolBoard concerning this matter for review.
