~TUESDAY, JULY 10, 1990

events occurred in one of the "better" sections of that
city. We truly do not know how well off we are here.

The people of this City are genuinely friendly and happy
to welcome you here as long as you are-supportive of the
City. How else could two non-natives be serving now as
your Mayor and. Vice-Mayor?

Questions have been raised concerning our climate and
quality of life. While it is hot here in the summer, a
-climate which has very little snow and where the snow,
when it does fall, is usually clear from the streets
within two days, can hardly be called harsh. It
certainly cannot be when compared to a climate where the
ground isn't seen for the snow from November to April.

The natural beauty of this area, with its eternal
mountains, clear lakes and streams, and spring flowering
trees and shrubs, is the essential background against
which the quality of life must be measured. While it is
...-~itrue~that~wehave fewestablishments offering wild night
life, are such diversions essential to living a healthy
life or raising well adjusted children? What we do have
are ample opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation,
enhanced, I might add, by the City Department of Parks
and Recreation. Where would you rather see your
children; practicing for Piedmont Youth Soccer League
competition or hanging around the rides at an amusement
park? For culturallenrichment, we need not look far to
find the growing Blue Ridge Regional Library System, the
Piedmont Arts Association or the Virginia Museum of
Natural History. Our new YMCA will provide another first
class opportunity for healthy activity and recreation.
The great number and wide variety of our churches, all
quite active, provide another positive aspect' of our
cultural life.

The Liberty Fair Mall, when coupled with our downtown,
provide a wide variety of goods and services for us to
purchase and enjoy. And our schools, both public and
private, together with Patrick Henry Community College
provide a sufficiently wide variety of educational
opportunities that all of our citizens can receive an
excellent education here =suited to their talents and
interests.

Moreover, Martinsville is connected to the world. For
those with the necessity or desire to travel, two fine
local travel agencies put the world at the other end of
our telephone. For commercial air travel, it takes me
only 15 minutes longer toget to the airport here than
it did when I lived in a large city with its. "own'~
