TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1990 <br /> <br /> Councilman Groden concurred with Councilman Cole and stated that <br />..he. felt the next four years will be critical in the school system. <br /> <br />Councilman Groden also said that he would like to see more <br /> <br />involvement of Blacks in the school system.. Mayor Oakes also <br />commended the candidates and said that he felt the educational <br /> <br />program was a strong point in the City. Mayor Oakes also praised <br /> <br />the relationship between the School Board and the Council. <br /> <br />Councilman Cole stated that the appointment of the two incumbents <br />is an outstanding example of the system for appointing school board <br /> <br />members in Virginia, and that he was not sure the City would have <br />the services of these men under some other system of school board <br />selection. There being no other comments, Mayor Oakes declared the <br /> <br />public hearing closed. <br /> <br />Mr. Mack Waid (who had missed the opportunity to speak before <br />Council during business from the floor) was given an opportunity <br />to speak by Mayor Oakes. Mr. Waid stated that he had a petition <br />r~garding funding for mental health programs which he would like <br />to bring before Council. Mayor Oakes directed Mr. Waid to meet <br />with Mr. Brown in order to get on the June 26 agenda, if <br />appropriate. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded, and by unanimous vote~ Council adopted <br />the following Ordinance (No. 90-7) approving the City Budget for <br /> <br />the fiscal year ending June 30, 1991: <br /> <br /> <br />
