380, <br /> <br />.TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1990 <br /> <br /> A regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of= the City of <br /> <br />~Martinsville, Virginia, with Mayor L.D. Oakes presiding, was held <br /> Tuesday, June 12, 1990, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, <br /> beginning at 9:30 A.M. The following members of Council were <br /> <br />present: <br />Groden. <br /> <br />McClain. <br /> <br />L.D. Oakes, Mayor; William C. Cole, Jr.; and Alfred T. <br />Absent were Clyde L. Williams, Vice-Mayor; and Allan <br /> <br />invocation was given by Councilman Cole, who read an~invocation <br /> <br />which was givenby The Reverend Jon W. Regen at Council's July 1, <br /> <br />1982.,meeting:. <br /> <br /> Our heavenly Father, today this Council sets out on a new <br /> journey together, with mountains to climb and valleys to <br />~. .... cross and miles to go. They make this journey on behalf <br /> of all of us here in this City, so give them strength for <br /> the journey and keep them. faithful to our trust. In the <br />~r .... "d~yS to come, widen decisions must be debated and <br /> delivered, when these members of Council are wearied by <br /> controversy and frustrated. by red tape and seduced by <br /> popularity and threatened.by pressures and inflated by <br /> power, grant to them, we-pray, both the desire and the <br /> ability to do their. work wisely ,and efficiently and <br /> fairly and honestly. Deliver them from ever being small <br />~ ,persons inlarge jobs, or.low persons in highpositions, <br /> or'weak persons in places,of severe testing. Above all, <br /> Lord God, assist them to=bring to the deliberations of <br /> 'this present time the truth!of All Time; prompt in them <br /> the recognition that it~is'in service to that truth that <br /> they will find accomplishment and we in this community <br /> will obtain good. And, lremind them alwaysthat-if it <br /> ~"'~ 'W~e'not for all the rest~ofus, they would not have an <br /> ~ .....~_ important job .to do and' that, ~if it were not for you, <br /> they would not have the strength to do it well.
