TUESDAY. MAY 8. 1990 <br /> <br /> "drop-off".points and recycling in the City. Mr. BroWn.recommended <br /> <br /> that:~Council.wait for the final report tobe completed~by the <br /> <br /> ~ consultants.on the~Solid Waste Study so,that any action taken by <br /> Council is consistent with an overall, long-range solid waste plan. <br /> However, Mr. Brown reported that the proposed budget provides <br /> $5,000 to establish adrop-off station at the Kroger store fronting <br /> Commonwealth Boulevard for use in collecting recyclable materials <br /> <br /> suchasaluminum,_glass, paper and plastics. Following, questions <br />.... byeCouncilman Groden, Mr. Brown explained that Kroger would monitor <br /> <br /> the,drop-off site and that the containers would be. rented from <br /> Cycle Systems. of Roanoke. Councilman Groden asked if a local firm <br /> had been approached to service the drop-off point, to which Ms. <br /> Nancy Henderson replied that there was no local firm which would <br /> take.the variety~ of materials which the~drop-off site would <br /> collect. Councilman McClain asked if the-Kroger site would be in <br /> competition with the Ham Center for the collection of aluminum <br /> cans..= Ms. Henderson.stated that it would not, as..peoplewho take <br /> <br /> cans to the Ham Center expect to be paid for them and that they <br /> !would probably continue to take cans to the Center., MayorOakes <br /> <br /> stated-,that he hoped the City would move ahead with this project, <br /> evenif itmeanta supplemental~appropriation from Council during <br /> <br /> the current ,fiscal year. ~-, . .,~ ,~/,~,~,~. <br /> <br /> Council acknowledged a report on Martinsville's rating as listed <br /> in the Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities.~ Mr. Brown <br /> noted. that~Council had been provided with.al,complete. report which <br /> <br /> <br />
