TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1990 <br /> <br />Chairman of CAER and the City's Fire Marshal, noted there was an accumulation <br />of hazardous waste at the City schools and that the proper disposal of this <br />material would cost $10,000 - $15,000. Mrs. Nancy Henderson, Chairman of the <br />Martinsville-Henry County Clean Community Commission, and Mr. Hank Hart of <br />DuPont Company spoke in support of this project. Concern was expressed by <br />various Councilmen as to the timingby the CAER Council in asking for funds, <br />noting that the proper time was during the annual budget discussions. Upon <br />motion, duly seconded and by a 4 to i vote (Mayor Oakes voting "no"), Council <br />agreed to take this reques~ under advisement during the budget discussions. <br /> <br />Council received a report by Mrs. Nancy Henderson, Chairman of the <br />Martinsville-Henry County Clean Community Commission, regarding the receipt of <br />an "Award of Excellence" in the 1989 Governor's Clean Virginia Awards Program <br />held in Richmond during January, 1990. This is the seventh consecutive year <br />that our Commission has won this award. She stated that there are several <br />programs in place now, April is Clean Community Month, 33 organizations in the <br />County participating in "Adopt A Highway", City is working on "Adopt A Spot", <br />participating in Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day, test program with the <br />Charity League involving recylcing, Springtime River Clean Up in May. The <br />Commission is promoting public awareness and public information programs, <br />especially through the school systems. <br /> <br />The following comments were made by various Councilmen: <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor Williams inquired about status of street and cul-de-sac <br />that was to have been installed at the end of Kings Row when there <br />was a street closing approximately two years ago. <br /> <br />Councilman McClain asked that the Administration consider placing <br />items on the Agenda during the morning meetings that are not of an <br />urgent nature, rather than placing them on the Agenda for the <br />evening meeting. <br /> <br /> <br />
